A Tribute to a Trailblazer

What it means to be a Trailblazer. A Tribute to Bill Russell.

Yesterday, William Felton Russell aka “Bill Russell” passed away peacefully at the age of 88 with his family by his side. Several news outlets described his feats on the court and off the court utilizing the term, “trailblazer.” A term I have heard on numerous occasions throughout my career, along with “torchbearer,” when describing folks like Mr. Russell.

So, I decided to look up their definitions. Trailblazer (noun): 1. A pioneer, an innovator. 2. A person who makes a new track through wild country. Torchbearer[1] (noun): 1. One that carries a torch. 2. Someone in the forefront of a campaign, crusade, or movement.

In both scenarios, the individual labeled as such is usually out in front of the masses. Not only are these individuals the first person to potentially receive praise, but they are also the first person to potentially receive ridicule. It takes courage to take on a role like this, and often it’s bestowed on an individual without their choosing. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Russell for serving as a Trailblazer.

Thank you, Mr. Russell, for not only having conviction, but standing by your conviction through action. Thank you, Mr. Russell, for providing me with a living example of work ethic. The Desire to Win means nothing without the Will to Prepare. Thank you, Mr. Russell, for providing a “voice” for the voiceless at times in your career. Thank you, Mr. Russell, for showing me what it takes to be a Champion (repeatedly)! And, finally… Thank you, Mr. Russell, for displaying the jovial disposition you provided us in the public in the face of triumph and adversity.

Rest in Power, Mr. Russell.
