With the support and guidance from family, friends, teachers and coaches, Steve earned a full-ride athletic scholarship to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While at Wake, Steve was a 4-year starter at wide receiver, became the first, track All-American in the school’s history and, most importantly, graduated with a mathematics degree.
After a short stint with the Chicago Bears (NFL) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL), Steve began to pursue his dream of being an Olympic athlete. Trained by Olympic coaches Charles Foster and the late Dr. LeRoy Walker, Steve earned first alternate on the 1996 United States Olympic team and ultimately competed for his late father’s homeland of Trinidad and Tobago in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in the 110-meter high hurdles event. As a world-class hurdler, Steve has competed in over 60 cities in 25 different countries spanning five continents.
After achieving his dream of becoming an Olympian, Steve furthered his education by earning a Master’s in Business Administration from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
Steve understands wholeheartedly the saying, “to whom much is given, much will be required” and the importance of giving back. He also knows that he has been afforded many opportunities through his diligence and hard work, and through the work of supporters and believers in his dream. In order to “pay it forward,” Steve strives to pass on the strategies of success he has learned throughout his journey by serving as a teacher, coach and motivational speaker.
